A Simple Way to Stretch your Gas Dollar

I have mentioned this tip before, but in light of today's outrageous gas prices, I wanted to share it with you again. Plus I just did it today with incredible results. Like I said, having the appropriate amount of air in your tires can help increase your MPG. Here's how you do it: Buy a tire pressure gauge or just go to the gas station. Your tires say the amount of max psi or pressure they will take, so fill all 4 slighly lower than that level. That's it. My car (that is up next month, hooray!) gets an abysmal 15mpg in town but cranked it out to 18.8mpg! Ok, it's only 3 miles extra, but for my 25 gallon tank, that's an extra 75 miles per fill up. Cha- ching!

I've actually heard the opposite.

You are supposed to increase the psi above the reccomended.

Though be careful because driving in heat expands the pressure in tires.

google this debate...i would say no to under inflate!

Another easy way to save gas is to SLOW DOWN! Remember when the freeway speed limit was lowered from 70 to 55 mph? It was to save gas! Then gas became cheap and plentiful and the speed limits crept up over time back up to 70 and beyond. On a recent road trip I lowered my cruise setpoint back to about 72 from 80-ish and saw my fuel econ go from 22-ish up to almost 26 mpg. It wasn't so fun having traffic flying by me, but c'est la vie. Just be nice and stay to the right and everyone can be happy. Oh, and keep your whole car properly maintained and your tires inflated to the manufacturer's recommendation... you will not only be saving $$ on gas and on not buying a new car, but also saving oil, and saving all the other raw materials and energy it takes to manufacture a new car!
